Many intermediate English language students find themselves stuck in a rut. They speak the language well enough to get by in day-to-day conversations and they can even read some tabloid newspaper articles without too much difficulty. However, what they really crave – fluency and accuracy in the English language – often seems to escape them. If you find yourself in this situation, there are a number of ways that you can push yourself to the next level and become an advanced student.
Escape the Intermediate Trap
You may find that some of the following suggestions work better for you than others but they are all worth trying as they have been successfully used by thousands of students before you.
- Constantly Expose Yourself to the English Language – Make an effort to watch English movies and TV programs on a daily basis and you will find yourself absorbing more of the language. You can also listen to English radio or audio books and change the default language on your computer and smartphone to English.
- Incorporate Pronunciation Drills into Your Daily Study – Learning to pronounce words like a native speaker seems like an impossible task when you are stuck at an intermediate level but if you persevere, you can get there in the end. If you don’t have access to a native speaker, record yourself running pronunciation drills and work on correcting your mistakes.
- Use English in a Fun Situation – If you use English in an environment you enjoy, it will be easier to make good progress. If for example you are a musician, join a band comprised of native English speakers.
There are many other ways that you can smash through the intermediate ceiling and become an advanced English language student but the above three will get you off to a flying start.
